MODELADO Y CARTOGRAFIA DEL ALMACENAMIENTO DE CARBONO EN LOS SUELOS DE LA REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA

La estimación de las reservas de carbono orgánico del suelo (COS) es muy relevante considerando que el COS es el impulsor central de la mitigación del cambio climático y la productividad del suelo. Este trabajo actualiza el mapa de almacenamiento de COS de Argentina para la capa 0-30 cm, utilizando un enfoque de Mapeo Digital de Suelos con el algoritmo Random Forest. Se analizaron 5.377 sitios muestreados entre 2015 y 2022 y se emplearon 38 variables predictoras climáticas, topográficas, edáficas y de vegetación. El almacenamiento total de COS se estimó en 13,19 PgC, con un rango de incertidumbre de 12,64-13,74 PgC. La reserva media nacional fue de 51,35 Mg ha⁻¹, con los valores más altos en humedales y tierras forestales. Sin embargo, al considerar la reserva total, los Pastizales acumulan el 61% del COS total del país, las Tierras forestales el 23%, las Tierras de cultivos el 13% y los Humedales el 3%. El modelo mostró un desempeño sólido (R² = 0,73) y confirmó que la temperatura es el principal factor de control del COS, seguida por la vegetación y las propiedades edáficas. Este mapa proporciona una línea de base para evaluar cambios en el almacenamiento de COS, lo que resulta clave para políticas de mitigación del cambio climático y manejo sustentable del suelo. Su actualización periódica permitirá reportar avances en compromisos internacionales y contribuir a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.
